Meet Our Associates

Martha Bartholomew’s
Nurturing Ministry

by Associate Annette Clemens

Associate Martha BartholomewSince becoming one of the original 14 “official” Sinsinawa Dominican Associates, Martha Bartholomew has had a thriving ministry in the arts and as the director of her own retreat house. Many Associates are probably already familiar with Martha’s poetry as she has four collections of published work. Two of her books have encouraged readers to respond to her poetry by allowing them to write down their thoughts in the empty spaces alongside the poems. The books are part of the "A Poet’s Words for a Reader’s Pen" series.

Martha’s work as director of the Siloam Retreat House in Dundee, IL, began when she and her husband, David, acquired and converted the property where previously stood a private arboretum. People visiting the retreat house have the opportunity to stay for a day of prayer, spiritual direction, walk along the many trails for reflection, or book a longer stay.

In both of her roles as poet and retreat house director, Martha’s ministries have no doubt been the catalyst for bringing much comfort, and she has nurtured many peoples’ lives. Her invitation to meditation and reflection are encouraging examples of God’s Spirit at work in the world.
