Meet Our Associates

Peter Fallon: A Truth-Seeker

by Associate Annette Clemens

Associate Peter FallonPeter Fallon’s search for truth is what comes to mind when you meet him. Peter has spent a number of years teaching journalism but with an emphasis on ethics in mass communication (i.e., the media). Not content to merely accept the narratives that the media impose on the public, he has published and lectured others to do the same. Peter states this most succinctly: “The greatest power that humans have is our ability to reason and think critically, to identify and reject falsehood, and to inch closer and closer to some discernment (incomplete though it must be) of truth. But mass media have their own power to create and support new falsehoods, and humans must be conscious and conscientious in thinking critically about the stories we receive in a mediated form.”

In addition to teaching courses as associate professor of journalism at Roosevelt University (Chicago), Peter is very busy these days. His second book, The Metaphysics of Media: Toward an End to Postmodern Cynicism and the Construction of a Virtuous Reality, continues his analysis about how the modern media often obscure truth. He has given many lectures on this topic in the recent past with more lined up over the next few months. He is also busy editing the international academic journal Explorations in Media Ecology. He will be responsible for the production of 12 issues over the next four years and he will be steering the publication toward a newer focus regarding mass communication ethics.

Needless to say, Peter lives a well-rounded life, and it is his painstaking efforts to educate people regarding the manipulation of the media and the search for truth that is his most profound Dominican trait.
