Associate Barbara Roth:
Weave of Dominican Identity

by Associate Annette J. Clemens

Associate Barbara Roth Over the course of several years, Associate Barbara Roth realized that the Dominican way was simultaneously something she desired to learn more about and something she already sensed was a deep part of herself. She was delighted to learn of the Associates through a long, working relationship with Sr. Mary Ann Shea and Sr. Jeanne Drea. Barbara had worked for several years as the diocesan director in Palm Beach. The three women worked together for social justice and helped individuals in lobbying for human rights. Barbara also helped parishes with community organizing. It was through these efforts that her eyes began to be opened to her Dominican calling.

In addition to her contributions in her diocese, Barbara has also been privileged to work for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development in her current position with Catholic Relief Services. She has strived to apply the leadership skills she saw embodied by the Sinsinawa Dominicans to these positions throughout her career. Obviously, the community has nurtured Barbara well in her endeavors, allowing her to work toward making the world a better place. Barbara made her initial commitment as an Associate in 1994 and this fall, we will have the pleasure of witnessing her make a lifetime commitment at the annual Associate Gathering in October. Adding to the festivities will be her husband, Ron (father of their 11 children and grandfather to their 22 grandchildren!), who will also be making his initial Associate commitment. Their daughter, Megan, is currently in the process of becoming an Associate. As Barbara has stated, her family demonstrates a very close “weave” with Dominican identity.

We are so glad Barbara joined our Dominican family. As you can see, her association with Sinsinawa has knitted her own family more closely together as well!
