The Anti-Racist Training Team

The Anti-Racist Training Team
History
The Undoing Racism Task Force (URTF), which was formed in 1991, has been the major force behind our Congregation's efforts to address the evils of racism. The primary work of the task force has been to focus on Sinsinawa Dominican racism, both individual and institutional. Through the years, the task force has educated the Congregation on racism in various ways.
The Sinsinawa Dominicans are committed to undoing racism within ourselves and in our institutions. Our Congregation began a process to develop a long-range plan to become an anti-racist, multicultural institution.
In January 1999, the leadership team, the directors in the Congregation, and the members of the URTF participated in an anti-racism workshop facilitated by Crossroads Ministry. As a result of that experience, a group was formed to discuss a process for our Congregation to begin the work of becoming an anti-racist institution.
In February 1999, this group met with Crossroads and accepted a three-phase proposal. This consisted of having Crossroads train a team within our Congregation who would implement strategies to dismantle racism within our institution.
In February 2000, the 21st General Chapter, the governing body of the Congregation, endorsed the process and the formation of the Anti-Racist Training Team (ARTT). We committed ourselves both personally and conregationally to become an anti-racist, multicultural institution.
The Sinsinawa Dominican Anti-Racist Training Team was formed in November 1999. The team began a yearlong training process with Crossroads. This was completed January 2001. Beginning in the spring of 2001, the ARTT presented an introductory anti-racism workshop to Sisters, Associates, and co-workers.
The Congregation is currently sponsoring the workshop Understanding and Analyzing Systemic Racism. This workshop is presented by Crossroads. Our goal is to provide opportunity for all our Sisters, Associates and co-workers to participate in this workshop.
Vision for the Year 2020
We embrace the vision of becoming anti-racist and multicultural by intentionally dismantling our racist structures, practices, and procedures. We commit ourselves to use the lens of antiracism to examine and redefine all aspects of our life, mission, and ministry so that we can create a new identity that is antiracist. We want to collaborate with others who challenge racism in the world and work to transform it into a holy and just society for all.
