Justice Committees

Since 1980, various committees have been involved in furthering the justice efforts of the Congregation. The past general chapters (governing bodies of the Congregation) have affirmed and encouraged the work of these committees. The sponsorship of these committees came under the Office of Peace and Justice when the office was established in 1983. These committees have been instrumental in guiding our Congregation’s justice agenda.

At this time, the seven justice committees the Office of Peace and Justice sponsors include the following:

  1. The Alternative Investment Advisory Committee makes recommendations to the Council (leadership team of the Congregation) regarding investments in projects having a human development purpose.
  2. The Shareholder and Consumer Action Advisory Committee makes recommendations to the Council regarding shareholder activity with companies whose common stock we own, purchasing constraints for our congregation portfolio, and participation in consumer boycotts.
  3. The Sinsinawa Women’s Network works to achieve full participation for women in the Church and in society through education and advocacy.
  4. The Ecology Committee works to achieve a more ecologically-friendly world through education and advocacy.
  5. The Faith and Resistance Working Circle resists current manifestations of injustice by action in faith and prayer, study, and personal conversion. In action with others, they engage in acts of nonviolent dissent.
  6. The Restorative Justice Committee works to bring about restorative justice through education and advocacy. It also provides support for people in prison.
  7. The Anti-Racism Training Team works through education, organizing, and advocacy to fulfill our desire to become an anti-racist, multicultural institution.
