Office of Peace & Justice
The Office of Peace and Justice was established in 1983 in response to the General Chapter (the governing body of the Congregation) in 1982, which called for “coordination” of justice and peace efforts at the congregation level. Sister Toni Harris was appointed the first justice promoter. She served on a full-time basis until 1986 at which time she continued her justice promoter responsibilities as part of the General Council (leadership team of the Congregation) from1986 to 1994. In 1990, Sister Gerry O’Meara, also a member of the General Council, was appointed associate promoter. The General Chapter in 1994 called for the continuation of the Office of Peace and Justice and the appointment of a full-time promoter. Sister Patricia Rogers, a member of the General Council, coordinated the peace and justice efforts in the interim. In 1995, Sister Bernadine Karge was appointed promoter. Bernadine served in this position until 1998 when Sister Reg McKillip was appointed and promoter until 2008. Currently, Sister Bernita Hessling serves as interim promoter.
The goals of the Office of Peace and Justice are the following:
- to provide regular information and educational materials to members and others;
- to encourage ongoing social analysis;
- to call membership to action on behalf of global and national justice issues and suggested action responses;
- to collaborate with and represent the Congregation in other justice efforts and organizations;
- to sponsor justice committees and groups related to particular justice concerns.
