Rest in Peace: Associate Eileen Noriega

by Associate Gail Austin

Eileen Noriega
  Eileen Noriega

Eileen Noriega was born Oct. 28, 1930, to Mr. and Mrs. Teijmul. Her maternal grandmother was a Carib princess from our indigenous people, her paternal grandfather came from India. She was baptized Catholic, and when the family changed residence she often had to walk long distances to attend Mass. She received her secondary education at Bishops Anglican High School after which she entered the government service. In 1970 Eileen studied at the University of the West Indies Jamaica and qualified in social work. She continued employment in the ministry of social welfare assisting persons to obtain pensions, grants, and allowances until her retirement as a senior welfare officer. In 1955 Eileen married Odil Noriega and had four children (two boys, two girls). She later adopted another daughter whom she described as a blessing to her family. When her husband died after 28 years of marriage, she devoted herself to caring for her family.

Eileen became a Sinsinawa Dominican Associate April 29, 1994, and served in the healing ministry at Holy Trinity Parish. There, she counseled and prayed with people. Her belief was to “put God first.” Whenever she faced a moment of decision, she would ask, “What would God have me to do?” She felt that, by fulfilling her duty to God, everything would fall in place. She was kind and generous and adored her five grandchildren. Eileen developed a brain hemorrhage, and, after a brief illness, died on March 3. Family, friends, Associates, and former coworkers attended her funeral on March 7 at the Santa Rosa Church. It was presided over by Msgr. Christian Pereira, vicar general and parish priest. Eileen has gone to be with God who was always first in her life. May she rest in peace.
