Congregation Appointees Named
Jeri Cashman, OP
Advocate for Our Life and Mission
by Jeri Cashman, OP
Jeri Cashman, OP, was a social worker in Hennepin County, MN, working with a team dedicated to building a safety net of county and community resources for Southside of Minneapolis. She loved the multiple challenges of Latino immigrant families, children in need of protection, and families in crisis.
Jeri brings her love and passion for Dominican life and mission to the Advocate for Our Life and Mission position in the Initial Membership Office. She shared that quality with her colleagues and University of Minnesota graduate school interns. She looks forward to using her skills in campus ministry, foreign ministry, and social work in her new position. One of her colleagues remarked, “I get what she’s doing for her community . . . Human Resources!”
Jeri will spend the next year meeting, listening, and planning with our Sisters, with all our partners, and women who are about to spend the one great, life adventure we have preaching, teaching, and participating in the building of a holy and just society. She’ll advocate for a network of advocates to further our life and mission. Jeri will advocate to ensure that our dedication to Gospel values, our commitment to love and laughter, and our passion for justice and peace are promoted by generations to come. She’s ready to confront today’s challenges in our culture and Church and the beauty of the questions we face today.
Jeri ministers from her community in Minneapolis, where values and goals are held in common; where gifts are nurtured, mistakes forgiven; and where she is consistently, warmly loved thanks to Sisters, family, and friends.
Joy Peterson, PBVM
Promoter of Peace and Justice
by Eileen Dushek-Manthe
Joy Peterson, PBVM, is the new Promoter of Peace and Justice for the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation. Joy will be present for one day of Community Days and begin the position Aug. 17.
Sisters may know Joy as the President of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Dubuque, 1998–2008. She has participated in the International Presentation Association, which sets goals for the Presentation justice efforts, attending Assembly meetings in New York, Australia, and India. Joy has also served as president of the North American Conference of Presentation Sisters, 2000–2003. For the last year, Joy ministered as a member of the nongovernmental organization of the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council, focusing on girls and women, migration, indigenous persons, and sustainable development.
In an e-mail, Patricia Mulcahey, OP, wrote, “Joy will bring to our efforts experiences of advocacy at the international, national, and local levels. She was seeking a position in which ‘to work with others in promoting justice for all people, especially those living in poverty, and to work with others for the integrity of all creation by taking responsibility for working within structures and organizations to campaign for changes in policies and governance.’”
