The members of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) have elected Edgewood College President Dan Carey vice chair of the association’s board of directors. NAICU is the leading national association representing private higher education. It serves as the unified voice of more than 1,000 independent colleges, universities, and specialized state and regional associations.
Carey was elected vice chair of the board at the association’s annual meeting in early February and will serve in that position for the coming year. He then will serve a one-year term as board chair beginning in 2011. Carey was initially elected by his peer presidents to a three-year term on the NAICU board in 2008, representing the association’s Region V (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin). “We are delighted to have Dan’s wise counsel as vice chair of the board at a time of considerable challenge and change for private higher education,” said NAICU President David L. Warren. “He is a seasoned leader among private college presidents, having served a previous term on the board. In electing him to his current term, his fellow presidents clearly recognized the experience and wisdom he would bring to the NAICU board.”
Carey has been president at the college since 2005. “This honor really speaks to the importance of schools like Edgewood College,” Carey said. “It places the college in direct relationship with policymakers at the national level.” Before coming to Edgewood College, Carey served for nine years as president of Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. “I’ve stayed engaged with this organization through the years because of our commitment to financial aid for students and families, and for our efforts to protect the interests of private colleges and universities and their ability to remain truly independent.” NAICU’s members are the leaders of the institutions and associations. NAICU member institutions enroll nine of every 10 students attending U.S. private colleges and universities. The association represents private colleges and universities on policy issues with the federal government, such as student aid, taxation, and government regulation. NAICU meets with policymakers, tracks campus trends, conducts research, analyzes higher education issues, helps coordinate state-level activities, and advises members of legislative and regulatory developments with potential impact on their institutions.
