Father Samuel labored among the Indians and traders in the Green Bay region. Later, as Pope John XXIII said, he became “the herald of the Gospel” in the Upper Mississippi River Valley. Father Samuel founded the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation. Father Mazzuchelli also established many parish communities and designed and built at least 24 churches and civic buildings in the tri-state area. He died in 1864. He was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II in 1993, the first step toward Beatification in the Catholic Church.
