Raising the White Flag: The War Against Black Hawk (Zoom)

The 1832 military conflict, which pitted American militias and regulars against the Sauk warrior Black Hawk and his band, ended in a massacre of hundreds of men, women, and children in the waters of the Mississippi River. Ms. Roberts will provide an overview of this tragic chapter in regional history with an emphasis on the role played by Henry Dodge, champion of the early lead miners and first Territorial Governor of Wisconsin.

Tracey Lee Roberts, Historian (Senior Lecturer Emerita, UW-Platteville History Dept.), has been researching and writing about the Lead and Zinc Mining District of the Driftless region of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois for three decades. She is currently writing a book about Henry Dodge, First Territorial Governor of Wisconsin. She has presented dozens of lectures and tours which engage audiences in the stories of the many peoples who made this region their home.
