Slavery and Bondage in the Driftless (via Zoom)

March 27 10:00 am - 11:00 am

$10.00

Despite the Northwest Ordinance’s 1787 prohibition of slavery and involuntary servitude, African American and African French people labored in bondage in the Wisconsin-Illinois lead district for white masters and mistresses. Why did the diggings become a center of slavery and quasi-slavery, and how did that work transform the area? Jennifer Stinson weaves together census records, settler memoirs, legal documents, county histories, maps, and photographs to tell the stories of the unfree men, women, and children who toiled and resisted in and around Sinsinawa Mound.

Saturday, March 27, 10-11 a.m. You will receive the zoom link via email on Friday, March 26.

$10/person fee. Registration deadline is Thursday, March 25 at 4 p.m.

Presenter: Jennifer Stinson (Ph.D. Indiana University, 2009) is an associate professor of history, gender, and public history at Saginaw Valley State University, Michigan. She researches African American, African French, and African Indigenous families’ attempts to gain, expand, and navigate the limits of freedom in the rural upper Midwest’s farming, mining, trading, and small-town communities. Stinson’s work appears in Middle West Review, Journal of Global Slavery, and Abolition & Slavery. Her forthcoming book is titled: “They All Mixed in Together, the White and the Colored:” Freedom, Family, and Race in the Rural Upper Midwest, 1820-1920. She serves as book review editor for Middle West Review.
