50 Years of Religious Life

The following eight Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa will celebrate their 50th jubilee at a Mass in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Mound on Sunday, July 14, 2019.

Sister Barbara Brown, OPSister Barbara Brown, OP, has ministered in Wisconsin, New Jersey, Illinois, and Montana. Her ministry has been dedicated to sacramental preparation and assisting those seeking annulments. In the Diocese of Madison, Sr. Barbara taught at St. Dennis, Madison, 1975-1978, and at St. Rose, Cuba City, 1969-1972 and 1973-1975. In the Diocese of Peoria, she taught at Holy Trinity, Bloomington, 1978-1981, and served as director of religious education at Visitation Parish, Kewanee, 1981-1982, and at St. Mary Parish, Kewanee, 1982-1986. In the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings, Sr. Barbara served as director of religious education at Little Flower, Billings, 1986-1991, and at Sacred Heart, Miles City, 1991-1995. She ministered as associate director of religious education for the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings, 1995-2003, and has served as pastoral minister at St. Pius X, Billings, since 2016. In the Diocese of Helena, she ministered as pastoral administrator at Sacred Heart Parish, Ronan, and St. Joseph Mission, Charlo, 2004-2016. Her home parish is Little Flower, Billings, in the Great Falls-Billings Diocese. She is the daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth (Obrigewitsch) Brown. Click here to send an honor online. 

Sister Marilyn Derr, OPSister Marilyn Derr, OP, has ministered in Illinois, South Carolina, and Alabama. Her ministry has been dedicated to adult education. She is currently ministering as an adult educator at The Learning Center and Deborah’s Place, both Chicago. Sr. Marilyn’s home parish is St. Jerome, Columbus, in the Madison Diocese. Sister Beverly Fowler, OPSister Beverly Fowler, OP, has ministered in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa. Her ministry has been dedicated to teaching. In the Diocese of Madison, Sr. Beverly taught at Edgewood High, Madison, 1972-1979, and has taught for the After School and Summer Daycare Programs at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Parish, Sun Prairie, since 2003. She served as director of liturgy at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Portage, 1984-1992, and taught environmental education at Bethel Horizons, Dodgeville, 2001-2007; Madison Metropolitan School District, Madison, since 2002; and Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Monona, since 2008. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sr. Beverly taught at Queen of Peace High School, Burbank, 1979-1983. In the Archdiocese of Dubuque, she ministered as director of liturgy at St. Pius X Parish, Cedar Rapids, 1993-1998. Her home parish is St. Patrick, Bloomington, in the Peoria Diocese. Sister Helen Glynn, OPSister Helen Glynn, OP, has ministered in Wisconsin and Illinois as well as over 23 years in Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, and Cabezas, Bolivia. Her ministry has been dedicated to teaching, nursing, administration, and community development. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sr. Helen taught at Trinity, River Forest, 1969-1973, where she also served as department chair, 1971-1973; and Marist High School, Chicago, 2003-2011. She served as pastoral associate at St. Michael in Old Town, 2001-2003. In the Diocese of Madison, Sr. Helen ministered as religious education coordinator at St. Dennis Parish, Madison, 1975-1978. Sr. Helen is living in community and volunteering in the Chicago area. Her home parish is St. Linus, Oak Lawn, in the Chicago Archdiocese. She is the daughter of the late James and Helen C. Sister Mary Ellen O’Grady, OPSister Mary Ellen O’Grady, OP, has ministered in South Dakota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and New York. Her ministry has been dedicated to education and promoting the Dominican Order. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sr. Mary Ellen taught at Immaculate Conception, 1973-1978, and served as principal at St. Luke, River Forest, 1983-1985. She is a graduate of Visitation Grade School (1962) and High School (1966), Chicago. Sr. Mary Ellen also taught at St. Joseph, Sioux Falls, SD, 1969-1972, and ministered as principal at St. Albert the Great, Minneapolis, 1978-1980, and as associate professor at Edgewood College, Madison, WI, 1985-1991. She continued living in the Madison area as she served the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa as vicaress of the Western Province, 1988-1992; vocation director, 1991-1992; coordinator of Associates, 1992-1996; and, since 2014, as a member of the Relationships for Mission Team. Sr. Mary Ellen worked as executive director of the Dominican Leadership Conference while living in the Chicago area, 1997-2010, and as promoter of collaboration for the Dominican Sisters in Committed Collaboration while living in Blauvelt, NY, 2012-2014. Her home parish is Visitation, Chicago, in the Chicago Archdiocese. She is the daughter of the late Hank and Lucy (Beslich) O’Grady. Click here to send an honor online.

Sister Colleen Settles, OPSister Colleen Settles, OP, has ministered in Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota, and California. Her ministry has been dedicated to education, spiritual care, and hospital administration. In the Diocese of Madison, Sr. Colleen taught and served as religious education director at Blessed Sacrament School and Parish, 1972-1979. She has ministered as a member of the leadership council for the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa since 2016. In the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Sr. Colleen ministered as chaplain at St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend, 1983-1990. Sr. Colleen ministered in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in mission leadership at Providence Health and Services in Mission Hills, Burbank and Santa Monica, 1990-2016. Her home parish is St. Monica, Kalamazoo, in the Kalamazoo Diocese. She is the daughter of the late Gerald Settles and the late Regina (Bordenet) Settles Subler. Click here to send an honor online. 

Sister Jo Ann Timmerman, OPSister Jo Ann Timmerman, OP, has ministered in Wisconsin, Iowa, California, and Colorado. Her ministry has been dedicated to adult education and parish work. She is currently serving as pastoral minister at Christ on the Mountain Parish, Lakewood, CO. Sr. Jo Ann’s home parish is St. Joseph, Sinsinawa, in the Madison Diocese. Sister Maryann “Mickey” Tranel, OPSister Maryann “Mickey” Tranel, OP, has ministered in Wisconsin, New York, Illinois, and Iowa. Her ministry has been dedicated to teaching and educational administration. In the Diocese of Madison, Sr. Maryann taught at St. Dennis, Madison, 1972-1977, and served as principal at St. Joseph School, Baraboo, 1984-1989; St. Victor School, Monroe, 1989-1995; and St. John School, Waunakee, 1998-2000. She ministered as secretary of the congregation for the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, Sinsinawa, 2006-2019. Sr. Maryann taught in the Archdiocese of New York at Our Lady of Mercy, Bronx, 1977-1979; in the Diocese of Peoria at Visitation, Kewanee, 1982-1984; and in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee at St. Bernard, Wauwatosa, 1979-1982. She served as administrative assistant in the Archdiocese of Dubuque at St. Dominic Villa, Dubuque, 1995-1998; and in the Diocese of Rockford at St. Mary School, East Dubuque, 2000-2006. Her home parish is Nativity BVM, Menominee, in the Rockford Diocese. Sr. Maryann is the daughter of the late Albert and Mary (Plear) Tranel. Click here to send an honor online.
